Interview mam Geneva Lee

Can you tell us a bit more about how you became a writer?
A few years ago, my mother-in-law challenged me to write a book. I’d talked about doing it in college but didn’t think I could. She believed in me and as it turned out she was right. I had a book and a publisher a year later!

Was it difficult for the first book to find a publisher?
I’ve been extremely fortunate to have wonderful publishers take chances on my books in America, Germany, and other countries. With the Royal books, which was my second book series, I opted to publish them on my own in the states, which is pretty common in romance here. I couldn’t believe it when Blanvalet picked up the books in Germany.

Could you describe literature in three words?
No freaking way. Does that count?

Is there a book you would never read? Why?
I think there are books that I would be less likely to read like horror stories. Everyone here is talking about Bird Box but I don’t think I could read it. I’m a bit of a scaredy cat.

What’s your favorite book?
I’m completely and utterly obsessed with A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I’ve read it a dozen times.

Favorite quote?
“It is our choices that show us who we truly are. Far more than our abilities.”

EBooks or paper print?
Both! I have a huge print library, but I buy so many ebooks so that I can read on the go. If I love a book I will have both.

What inspires you?
I’m always very inspired by other women writers I meet. I think there’s a tendency to treat women who write romance and children’s books and fantasy like they’re not serious writers. But these women are smart, funny, and driven. They work hard for their success and they do it knowing they won’t get as much respect as a lot of male writers. Being true to yourself and doing things your way is very inspiring.

Imagine you were given the opportunity to meet a book character in real life. Who would that be?
Harry Potter if we’re talking about any character. Hands down. I’m a HUGE Harry Potter fan. I’ve read the books over and over again. JK Rowling is a true genius.

If we’re talking about my books, I would love to meet Alexander. He’s so clear in my mind and I love him so much despite all his flaws. I just want to talk to him and see what he looks like. He’s so real to me and it’s incredibly sad that I will never actually *meet* him.

What’s your worst nightmare?
Running out of Coke Zero Sugar. I’m addicted.

The best decision of your life was?
Marrying my husband. We met when I was 15 and he is my whole world. Every love story I write is for him.

I can’t wait to read your next book. Are you currently working on a project? Is there any release date to reveal?
My next book is Wild King, which comes out in English on January 22nd. Fingers crossed that I have German news to share soon! It’s a new series that features the characters from the Royals books. I always thought their stories weren’t out, but I wanted to wait until I felt like it was the right time to go back to them. Over the last year with the Royal wedding a new Royal baby, I kept thinking about them and then one day Alexander sort of popped into my head and demanded a new book!

My next book in Germany is book two in my Girls in Love series. It’s a much lighter, happier series that was so nice to write. I really love those girls. It’s completely different than the Royal books, but if you enjoy romantic comedy, it’s a lot of fun. Book one in that series—Now and Forever—is one of my favorite books that I’ve written.

I have a couple new series in the works, but I can’t say anything about them just yet! I’m also co-writing my first series with one of my favorite authors and it’s going to be awesome!
